How to Play UNO Remix Card Game (Rules and Instructions)

How to Play UNO Remix Card Game (Rules and Instructions)

Originally released back in 1971 UNO is arguably one of the most popular card games of all time. A simple card game that is easy to play and plays rather quickly is compelling to a lot of people. With its success the game has had a lot of success which has lead to a lot of spinoff games that tweak the formula. One of the most recent UNO games is UNO Remix which has an interesting take on the formula. The game actually allows players to create their own unique customized deck as you play rounds of the game.

Objective of UNO Remix

The objective of each hand of UNO Remix is to be the first player to get rid of all of the cards from your hand.

Setup for First Game of UNO Remix

  • Unwrap both decks of cards. Make sure not to mix up the order of the Remix cards.
  • Write each player’s name on one of the rows on the back of the instructions.
  • Take a number of cards from the Remix deck equal to the number of players playing the game. These cards should be taken from the front of the box. Place all of these cards face up on the table.
  • Starting with the youngest player, each player will take one of the cards and will write a name on it (see the Remix cards section below to see the effect of each card). After the youngest player, players will take turns in clockwise order taking a card.
  • Once everyone has customized their Remix card, they will be added to the main deck of cards. Choose a player to be the dealer. The entire deck of cards will now be shuffled. Seven cards will be dealt to each player.

Playing UNO Remix

Outside of some unique cards, UNO Remix is played like a normal game of UNO.

On your turn you will look at the top card of the discard pile. If you have a card in your hand that either matches the color, number, or symbol; you can choose to play it to the discard pile. You may also choose to play a Wild card.

Playing A Card in UNO Remix
The current card on the top of the discard pile is a red eight. Along the bottom of the picture are three cards that the player could play on their turn. The blue eight matches by number, the red four matches by color, and the Wild card can be played on any card.

UNO Remix Action Cards

In the normal UNO Remix deck there are a number of different cards. Number cards have no special ability. The other actions cards have special abilities which are detailed below.

Reverse Card UNO Remix

Reverse

When a player plays a Reverse card, the direction of play will reverse. If play was moving clockwise, it will now move counterclockwise and vice versa. Reverses can either be played on top of other Reverses or they can be played on cards of the same color.

Skip Card UNO Remix

Skip

If you play a Skip card, the next player is turn order will lose their turn. Skip cards can either be played on other Skip cards, or they can match a card of the same color.

Wild Card UNO Remix

Wild

When a Wild card is played, the player who played it will get to choose a color that the next player will have to play. Wilds can be played on any other card including other Wilds.

Plus Card from UNO Remix

Plus

Plus cards will feature a number of tally marks on them. When played the next player will have to draw one card for each tally mark on the card. The next player will also lose their turn. Plus cards can be played on other Plus cards or cards that match its color.

Remix Cards

After each round players will draw new Remix cards which will be customized with the player’s names. What each card does is detailed below.

Wild + Name Card UNO Remix

Wild + Name

When a player chooses this Remix card during setup, they will add their own name to the card.

During the game when one of these cards are played, the player whose name is written on the card will get to choose the color even if they weren’t the player who played the card.

Skip – To

When this card is customized, the player who chose it will write their own name on the card.

During play this card can be played on any card with a matching symbol or color. The player whose name is written on the card will take the next turn. Play will then proceed in turn order.

The Giving Card UNO Remix

The Giving Card

To customize the card you will write the name of an opponent on the card.

When one of these cards are drawn, it will be immediately passed to the player whose name is on the card. The card cannot be blocked by a Shield card. To play the card it needs to either match the symbol or color.

Add A Mark Card UNO Remix

Add A Mark

When a player takes this card, they will choose one of the Plus card from the main deck. They will add one tally mark to the Plus card they chose. The Add A Mark card is then discarded/destroyed/etc. as it will never be used in gameplay ever again.

Shield + Name Card UNO Remix

Shield + Name

The player that chooses the card will place their own name on the card.

Shield cards can be played if they match the symbol or color of the top card on the discard pile.

Shield cards can also be played to block a penalty card played against you (Plus, Draw 2, Wild Draw 4). If your name is on the card, you may block any Plus, Draw 2 or Wild Draw 4 cards. If the name on the card isn’t yours, you may only block a penalty card of the same color. In the case of blocking a Wild Draw 4 and your name is not on the card, you must first wait for the player to choose the new color to determine if it matches the color of the Shield.

If you block a penalty card with a Shield, play will proceed like normal ignoring the effect of the penalty card.

Draw 2 + Name Card UNO Remix

Draw 2 + Name

The player who customizes the card will write down the name of one of their opponents.

Draw 2 + Name cards can be played on other Draw 2 cards or cards of the same color.

When the card is played, the player whose name is written on card will have to draw two cards. If there are two names on the card, the player who played the card chooses which of the two players will draw the two cards.

After the player draws two cards, the next player in turn order will take the next turn if the player who had to draw cards was not the next player in turn order. If the player who had to draw cards is the next player, I am assuming they lose their turn as that is the rule for Draw 2 cards in every other UNO game.

Wild Draw 4 Card UNO Remix

Wild Draw 4

Whoever customizes the card will write down the name of one of their opponents.

The card may be played on any card as long as you do not have another card in your hand that matches the current color. The player who is forced to draw cards can challenge you if they think you incorrectly played the card. The player who played the card must show their entire hand to the challenger. If the card was played incorrectly (they have another card in their hand that matches the current color), the player who played the card will have to draw four cards. If the card was played correctly, the challenging player will have to draw six cards instead of four.

When played the player whose name is on the card will draw four cards. If there are two names on the card, the player who played the card will choose one of the two names on the card to draw the four cards.

After a player draws four cards, play will continue in turn order if the player who had to draw cards is not the next player in turn order. If the player who had to draw cards is the next player, I assume they lose their turn as that is what happens in every other UNO game.

Add A Name to Draw 2/Draw 4

When a player chooses to customize this card they will find one of the corresponding cards from the main deck. They will then have the opportunity to write a second name on the card. The Add A Name to Draw 2/Draw 4 card will then be destroyed/discarded as it will no longer be used.

End of Round

The first player to get rid of all of the cards from their hand wins each round.

The player that won the round will take the lowest numbered star that is still remaining and add it by their name on the scoresheet.

Playing Another Round

When you play another round of UNO Remix take a number of cards from the front of the Remix deck equal to the number of players. Place these cards face up on the table.

Starting with the player who won the last round, each player will choose one of the face up cards from the table. If you want you can otherwise choose a random player to make the first choice of a card. The players will then take turns in clockwise order taking one card.

Each player will customize the card they drew based on the type of card. All of these new cards will be added to the main deck along with any Remix cards from previous rounds. All of the cards will be shuffled and seven cards will be dealt to each player.

The Final Round

You will keep playing rounds in this way until there are only enough Remix cards left for the final round. If there are not enough cards left for everyone, some players won’t get to customize a Remix card.

Players will then determine who is the ultimate winner of UNO Remix after they complete the final round.

Count up the number of stars/rounds that each player won. The player that won the most rounds wins UNO Remix and will place the crown sticker next to their name on the scoresheet to indicate that they won the game. If there is a tie, the tied player with a highest numbered star wins the game.

Whichever player won the least stars/rounds will receive the Joker sticker. If there is a tie for least stars, the tied player whose highest star number is lower will be the joker.

Both the winner and joker will get to cross off a name from one of the Remix cards in the game. For any future games, the Remix cards will stay as they are at this point. By playing through all of the rounds, you have created a unique customized deck that you can continue playing with.

Order of Remix Deck

The order of the Remix deck is in a specified order so the new cards get added to the deck in a particular order. If your deck of Remix cards should get mixed up, here is the original order of the cards.

To make this a little shorter I will use abbreviations for the cards as follows:

  • W = Wild + Name
  • SK = Skip To
  • G = The Giving Card
  • AM = Add A Mark
  • SH = Shield + Name
  • D2 = Draw 2 + Name
  • WD4 = Wild Draw 4
  • AN2 = Add A Name to Draw 2
  • AN4 = Add a Name to Draw 4

Before I started making this list I had already used 16 of the cards so I don’t know the original order of the first 16 cards. The first 16 cards of the deck are as follows: 3 – AM, Green SH, Red SH, 2 – Yellow SK, Blue SK, Green SK, Red SK, 6 – W

The rest of the deck is as follows:

AM, W, Blue SH, Green D2, Blue SK, Yellow SH, AM, Green SK, Red SH, W, Blue D2, AM, Yellow SH, AM, Red D2, Blue SH, W, Yellow D2, Red G, AM, Green SH, AN2, Blue G, W, AN2, WD4, Green G, Red SK, AN2, Yellow G, WD4, AM, AN2, Red G, AN4, Green G, Blue G, AN4, Yellow G
