Objective of UNO Star Wars

The objective of UNO Star Wars is to play all of the cards from your hand before the other players.

Setup for UNO Star Wars

  • All of the players draw a card. The player that draws the highest number becomes the dealer. Action Cards count as zero.
  • The dealer shuffles all of the cards. They will deal seven cards to each player.
  • Place the remaining cards facedown on the table. These cards form the Draw Pile.
  • Turn over the top card from the Draw Pile to form the Discard Pile. If you flip over an Action Card, you will take a special action which is detailed in its corresponding section below.
  • The player to the left of the dealer starts the game. Turn order passes clockwise/left to start the game.

Playing UNO Star Wars

On your turn you will try to play a card from your hand to the Discard Pile. In order to play a card it has to match one of the three elements of the card on the top of the Discard Pile:

  • Color
  • Number
  • Symbol

If you have a card in your hand that matches one of the elements of the top Discard Pile card, you can play the card to the pile. If you play an Action Card you will take a special action. See the corresponding section below for more information.

Playing a matching card in UNO Star Wars
The top card on the Discard Pile is a green two. Along the bottom are five cards you could potentially play on your turn. You can play the green three because it matches the color. The orange two matches the number so you can play it. The final three cards are wild so you could play them on any card.
Playing a matching symbol card
The top card on the Discard Pile is a Reverse card. You could choose to play your own Reverse card on your turn because it matches the symbol.

After playing a card your turn ends. Play passes to the next player in turn order.

You can choose not to play a card from your hand even if you have one that you can play. If you choose to not play a card, you will treat the rest of your turn like you didn’t have a card that you could play. You cannot play any of the cards currently in your hand, for the rest of this turn.

Drawing a Card

If you do not have a card that you can play or you choose not to play one, you will take the top card from the Draw Pile. Look at the card you just picked up. If this card matches one of the elements from the top card on the Discard Pile, you can choose to play the card immediately.

Otherwise you will add the card to your hand.

If the Draw Pile ever runs out of cards, shuffle the Discard Pile to form a new Draw Pile.

In either case your turn ends and play passes to the next player in turn order.

UNO Star Wars Card Meanings

Number cards in UNO Star Wars

Numbers

Number cards do not have any special action in UNO Star Wars. You can only play a number card if it matches the color or number of the top card on the Discard Pile.

Draw Two card in UNO Star Wars

Draw Two

When you play a Draw Two card, the next player in turn order has to take two cards from the Draw Pile. They also lose their turn.

You may play a Draw Two card on top of another Draw Two card, or a card that matches its color. If a player plays a Draw Two card against you, you cannot play your own Draw Two card in order to pass the punishment of drawing cards onto another player.

Should a Draw Two card be flipped over to start the round, the player to the left of the dealer has to draw two cards and loses their turn.

Reverse card in UNO Star Wars

Reverse

A Reverse card changes the direction of play. If play was moving clockwise/left, it will now move counterclockwise/right. If it was moving counterclockwise/right, it will now move clockwise/left.

You can play a Reverse card on top of another Reverse card or a card that matches its color.

If a Reverse card is flipped over to start the round, the dealer takes the first turn and player passes counterclockwise/right.

Skip card in UNO Star Wars

Skip

When you play a Skip card, the next player in turn order loses their turn.

You can play a Skip card on top of another Skip card, or a card that matches its color. If a player plays a Skip card against you, you cannot play your own Skip card in order to avoid the punishment.

If a Skip card is turned over to start the round, the player to the left of the dealer is skipped. The player to their left starts the round.

Wild card in UNO Star Wars

Wild

Wild cards match all other cards in the game. Therefore you can play Wild cards at any time. You can play a Wild card even if you have another card in your hand that you can play.

When you play a Wild card you will choose a color to change the Discard Pile to. You can choose any of the four colors including the color it was when you played the card. The next player in turn order has to play a card that matches the color you picked, or their own Wild card.

If a Wild card is turned over to start a round, the player to the left of the dealer chooses the color for the Discard Pile and takes their turn.

Wild Draw Four card from UNO Star Wars

Wild Draw Four

A Wild Draw Four card is wild so it matches every other card in the game. You also get to choose the color for the Discard Pile. You can choose any of the four colors.

There is a catch when playing a Wild Draw Four card though. While it matches every card in the game, you can only play it if you have no cards in your hand that match the color of the Discard Pile. You can still play the Wild Draw Four if you have a card that matches the current number or symbol. The rules for UNO Star Wars say that you can have matching Action Cards in your hand and still play a Wild Draw Four card. Since wild cards are considered Action Cards, you should be able to play a Wild Draw Four card even if you have other wild cards in your hand.

If a Wild Draw Four card is turned over to start the round, return the card to the deck. Flip over another card.

When a Wild Draw Four card is played, the next player in turn order has a choice to make.

Playing a Wild Draw Four card
The current player played a Wild Draw Four card on top of an orange seven card.

First they can accept that the player played the Wild Draw Four correctly. In this case they will draw four cards and they will lose their turn.

Challenging the Wild Draw Four

Otherwise the player can challenge the player that played the Wild Draw Four.

In this case the player that played the Wild Draw Four has to show the challenger all of the cards from their hand. The challenger looks at the cards to see if there is a card that matches the color of the card played before the Wild Draw Four.

If the challenger is unable to find a card that matches the color, the player played the Wild Draw Four correctly. The challenger now has to draw six cards and they still lose their turn.

Playing a Wild Draw Four card correctly
The player that played the Wild Draw Four did not have any orange cards in their hand. Therefore they played the card correctly. The challenger now has to draw six cards.

If the challenger finds a card that matches the color, the player incorrectly played the Wild Draw Four. The player who played the card now has to draw four cards. The challenger does not have to draw any cards, and they also don’t lose their turn.

Playing a Wild Draw Four card incorrectly
The player that played the Wild Draw Four card had an orange card in their hand. Therefore they played the card incorrectly. They will have to draw the four cards instead of the challenger.
Wild The Force card from UNO Star Wars

Wild The Force

When you play a Wild The Force card you will choose another player and a color.

The chosen player has to show you their hand. If they have at least one card that matches the color you chose, the chosen player has to draw two cards.

Playing a Wild The Force card
The player that played the Wild The Force card chose green for the color. The player they chose had a green card in their hand. Therefore the chosen player has to draw two cards.

If the chosen player does not have a matching color card, there is no penalty. Play continues normally with the next player in turn order.

In either case the Discard Pile becomes the color that you chose when you played the Wild The Force card.

If a Wild The Force card is turned over to start the round, the player to the left of the dealer chooses the color for the Discard Pile. The first player then takes their turn.

Calling UNO

When you only have one card left in your hand, you need to say “UNO” out loud. This is done to let the other players know that you are close to winning the game.

Calling UNO
This player only has one card left in their hand. They should call out UNO as quickly as possible to avoid having to draw cards.

If you do not call out UNO, another player can catch you. If they catch you before the next players begins their turn, you must draw two cards.

End of Round

When a player plays the last card from their hand, they win the current round.

The rest of the players pass the cards left in their hand to the winner of the round. If the last player played a Draw Two or a Wild Draw Four, the next player draws the corresponding number of cards before they pass all of their cards to the winner.

The winner of the round then counts up the points for each card they collected from the other players.

  • Numbers – face value
  • Draw Two, Reverse, Skip – 20 points each
  • Wild, Wild Draw Four, Wild The Force – 50 points each
Scoring in UNO Star Wars
At the end of a round the players had these cards left in their hands. The winner scores points from the cards as follows. The top three cards score 15 points (4 + 5 + 6). The three middle cards each score 20 points. The bottom three cards score 50 points each. The winner scores a total of 225 points from the cards.

You will keep a running total of each player’s score throughout the game. If no player has scored 500 or more total points, shuffle the cards and play another round.

Winning UNO Star Wars

The first player to score 500 or more points, wins the game.

Alternative Scoring

Instead of the players passing all of their remaining cards to the winner of each round, players score points for the card left in their own hand. Cards score the same number of points as normal scoring.

Once one of the players have scored 500 points, the game ends. The player that scored the least points wins the game.
