Objective

The objective of UNO: Space Jam – A New Legacy is to play all of the cards from your hand before the other players.

Setup

  • Each player randomly draws a card from the deck. The player that draws the highest numbered card is the dealer (Action cards count as zero).
  • The dealer shuffles all of the cards. They will deal seven cards to each player. Players can look at their own cards, but they shouldn’t show them to the other players.
  • Place the rest of the cards faces down on the table to form the Draw Pile.
  • Turn over the top card from the Draw Pile in order to form the Discard Pile. If you flip over an Action card, the first player will take a specific action. See the section below for the corresponding card for details.
  • The player to the left of the dealer starts the game. Play proceeds clockwise (left) to start the game.

How to Play UNO: Space Jam – A New Legacy

On your turn you will try to play one of the cards from your hand to the Discard Pile. To play a card it has to match the top card of the Discard Pile in one of three ways.

  • Color
  • Number
  • Symbol

If you have a card in your hand that matches at least one of these criteria, you can play the card to the top of the Discard Pile. Should you play an Action card, you will take a special action. See the UNO: Space Jam – A New Legacy Card Meanings section below for more details.

Playing a card in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy
The top card on the discard pile is a blue four. Along the bottom are some cards that the next player could play on their turn. The blue seven could be played because it matches the color. The orange four matches the number. The final three cards could be played because they are wild cards.
Playing a Draw Two card on top of another Draw Two card
The top card on the Discard Pile is a Draw Two card. The next player could play a Draw Two card because it matches the symbol of the top card on the Discard Pile.

You may choose to not play a card even if you have a card that you can play. In this case you will treat the rest of your turn like you didn’t have a card that you could play.

Drawing A Card

If you do not have any cards in your hand that match the top card from the Discard Pile, you will take the top card from the Draw Pile. Look at the card and see if it matches one of the three criteria to play it. If it matches one of the criteria, you can play it to the Discard Pile immediately. This new card is the only card you can play to the Discard Pile, even if you have another card in your hand that you could play. If you can’t play this new card, you will add it to your hand.

If the Draw Pile ever runs out of cards, you will shuffle the Discard Pile in order to form a new Draw Pile.

Whether you play or draw a card, your turn then ends. Play passes to the next player in turn order.

UNO: Space Jam – A New Legacy Card Meanings

Number cards in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Number Cards

Number cards have no special action. You can only play them if they match the color or number of the top card on the Discard Pile.

Draw Two card in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Draw Two (+2)

When you play a Draw Two card, the next player in turn order has to draw two cards from the Draw Pile. They will also lose their turn.

If a Draw Two card is turned up to start the round/hand, the normal first player has to draw two cards and loses their first turn. The player to the left of the normal first player starts the round.

Reverse Card in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Reverse

The Reverse card changes the direction of play. If play was moving clockwise (left), it will now move counterclockwise (right). If it was moving counterclockwise, it will now move clockwise.

Should a Reverse card be turned over to start the round/hand, the dealer takes the first turn. Turn order will also proceed counterclockwise to start the game.

Skip card in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Skip

When you play a Skip card the next player in turn order loses their turn.

If a Skip card is turned over to start the round/hand, the player to the left of the dealer skips their first turn. The player to their left starts the game.

Wild Card in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Wild

A Wild card matches every other card in the game so you can play it at any time. When you play a Wild card, you choose the color of the Discard Pile. You can pick any of the four colors including the color it was before you played the Wild card. You can play a Wild card even if you have another card in your hand that can be played.

If a Wild card is turned over to start the round/hand, the player to the left of the dealer chooses the color of the Discard Pile. They also get to take the first turn.

Wild Draw Four card in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Wild Draw Four (+4)

A Wild Draw Four card matches every other card in the game. When you play the card you will choose the color for the Discard Pile.

The next player in turn order also has to draw four cards and loses their next turn.

Unlike a normal Wild though, there is a restriction on when you can play a Wild Draw Four. You can only play a Wild Draw Four if you have no other cards in your hand that match the color of the Discard Pile. You can still play the Wild Draw Four if you have a card that matches the number or symbol of the top card from the Discard Pile. Note: This version of the game does not specify whether Wild cards count as matching the color. In most versions of UNO though, a Wild card does count as matching the color and therefore prevents you from playing a Wild Draw Four.

Playing a Wild Draw Four card
A player played a Wild Draw Four card on top of a blue nine. The next player has to decide whether they want to challenge the play of the card.

When another player plays a Wild Draw Four against you, you have a choice to make.

You can accept the play of the card. You will draw four cards and skip your turn.

Challenging

If you think the player played the card incorrectly though, you may challenge it. The player who played the card has to show you all of the cards from their hand so you can verify that the Wild Draw Four was played correctly.

If they played the card correctly (they did not have any cards that matched the color), you will have to draw six cards (instead of four) and you will lose your turn.

Playing a Wild Draw Four Correctly
The player that played the Wild Draw Four card did not have any blue cards in their hand. Therefore they played the card correctly. The player that challenged now has to draw six cards.

If they played the card incorrectly (they had a card that matched the color), they will have to draw the four cards instead of you. You also don’t lose your next turn.

Playing a Wild Draw Four Incorrectly
The player that played the Wild Draw Four did have a blue card in their hand. Therefore the Wild Draw Four card was played incorrectly. The player who played the Wild Draw Four has to draw the four cards instead of the challenger.

Should a Wild Draw Four be flipped over to start the round/hand, you will return it to the deck and flip over another card.

Wild Welcome of the Jam card UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy

Wild Welcome to the Jam

The Wild Welcome to the Jam card is wild so you can play it at any time.

When you play the Wild Welcome to the Jam card, you will hold it in the air above the play area. The game does not specifically say how you are supposed to hold the card in the air. You should be able to drop the card however you want as long as you do in a way where both sides have the same odds of landing face up. Drop the card. Depending on which side lands face up, you will take one of two actions.

Dropping the Wild Welcome to the Jam card
This player is holding the Wild Welcome to the Jam card in the air. When they are ready, they will drop the card to see what side lands face up.

If the card lands with the basketball/LeBron James side face up, you get to discard two cards from your hand.

Wild Welcome to the Jam discard two cards side landed face up
Since the LeBron James side landed face up, the player who played the card discards two cards from their hand.

If the card lands with the UNO/back side face up, you have to draw two cards.

Draw two cards side landed face up on Wild Welcome to the Jam card
The back side of the Wild Welcome to the Jam card landed face up. The player that played the card is forced to draw two cards based on how the card landed.

No matter the outcome of the card drop, you will get to choose the color for the Discard Pile.

Should a Wild Welcome to the Jam card be flipped over to start the round/hand, the player to the left of the dealer chooses the color for the discard pile and takes the first turn.

Calling UNO

When you only have one card left in your hand, you should call out UNO as quickly as possible. This is done to let the other players know that you are close to winning the game.

Calling UNO in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy
This player only has one card left in their hand. They should call out UNO as quickly as possible.

If you don’t call out UNO and another player catches you, you have to draw two cards. The player has to call you out before the next player starts their turn.

End of Round and Scoring

When a player plays the last card from their hand, the round ends.

All of the players that still have cards in their hand pass them to the player that played all of their cards. If the last played card is a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four, the corresponding player has to draw the additional cards and gives them to the winner of the round. The winner of the round scores points for each of the cards that are handed to them. They will score points as follows:

  • Number cards – face value
  • Draw Two, Reverse, Skip – 20 points
  • Wild, Wild Draw Four, Wild Welcome to the Jam – 50 points
Scoring in UNO: Space Jam - A New Legacy
The winner of the round collected these nine cards from the other players’ hands. They will score points for the cards as follows. The number cards score 15 points (4 + 3 + 8). They will score 20 points each for the Draw Two, Reverse and Skip cards. Finally they will score 50 points each for the Wild, Wild Draw Four and Wild Welcome to the Jam cards. They will score a total of 225 points from the cards.

The players will keep a running total of all of the points players have earned in the game. If none of the players have scored 500 or more points, another round is played.

Winning the Game

The first player to score 500 or more total points, wins the game.

Alternative Scoring

Instead of giving all of the cards left in your hand to the winner of the round, you will keep the cards left in your hand. Each player scores points for the cards left in their own hand. They will score points for each card as shown above.

You will keep playing rounds until one player has scored 500 or more points. The player with the least total points wins the game.
