Objective of UNO Flip! Stranger Things
The objective of UNO Flip! Stranger Things is to be the first player to play all of the cards from your hand.
Setup for UNO Flip! Stranger Things
- Make sure all of the cards are facing the same way. You can tell by looking the the borders of the cards.
- Choose a player to be the dealer. They will shuffle all of the cards.
- The dealer deals seven cards to each player. You will hold the cards so the Real World side (light border) faces you. The Upside Down (dark border) should face the other players.
- Place the remaining cards so the Upside Down side is face up. This forms the Draw Pile.
- Take the top card from the Draw Pile and flip it over to create the Discard Pile. This card should now be on the Real World side. If you flipped over an Action card (any card that is not a number card), you will ignore its action and flip over another card.
- The player to the left of the dealer starts the game. Play moves clockwise at the start of the game.
Playing UNO Flip! Stranger Things
On your turn you will try to play one of the cards from your hand to the Discard Pile. To play a card it has to match one of the following criteria:
- Color
- Number
- Symbol
If your card matches one or more of these criteria, you may play the card to the Discard Pile. If you played an Action card you will take the corresponding action. See the corresponding section below for more details.
You may choose not to play a card from your hand even if you have one that you can play. If you choose not to play a card, you will treat the rest of your turn like you didn’t have a card that you could play.
Should you have no cards to play on your turn, you will draw the top card from the Draw Pile. Check to see if you can play this new card following the rules above. If you can play the new card, you can choose to play it immediately. Otherwise you will add the card to your hand. Make sure to add the card to your hand so its side matches the rest of the cards in your hand.
Your turn ends as soon as you play or discard a card.
Real World UNO Flip! Stranger Things Card Meanings
Number
Number cards have no special action in the game. You can only play them if they match the color or number of the top card on the Discard Pile.
Draw One (Eddie Munson)
The Draw One card features +1 in the corners, and a picture of the character Eddie Munson.
When you play a Draw One card, the next player has to draw one card. They also lose their next turn.
You can play a Draw One card on top of another Draw One card, or a card that matches its color. You cannot play a Draw One card to avoid having to draw a card and lose your turn if the previous Draw One was played against you.
Reverse (Robin Buckley)
The Reverse card features two arrows pointing in opposite directions, and a picture of the character Robin Buckley.
When you play a Reverse card, the direction of play changes. If play was moving clockwise, it will now move counterclockwise. If it was moving clockwise, it will now move clockwise.
You may play a Reverse card on top of another Reverse card, or a card that matches its color.
Skip (Argyle)
The Skip card features a circle with a line through it, and a picture of the character Argyle.
When you play a Skip card, the next player loses their turn.
You can play a Skip card on top of another Skip card, or a card that matches its color. You may not play a Skip card to avoid being skipped by the Skip card played by the previous player.
Wild Draw 2 (Erica Sinclair)
The Wild Draw 2 card features +2 in the corners as well as a picture of the character Erica Sinclair.
The Wild Draw 2 card is wild so it matches every other card in the game. The catch is that you can only play the card if you do not have any other cards in your hand that match the color of the top card on the Discard Pile. Wild cards count as matching the color.
Playing a Wild Draw 2 allows you to change the Discard Pile to any of the four colors including the one it was when you played the card. Changing the color of the Discard Pile does not change the outcome if the next player should challenge the play of the card. The next player in turn order has to play a card that matches this new color, or they would play another wild card.
When you play a Wild Draw 2 card, the next player in turn order has a decision to make.
First they can choose to draw two cards and lose their next turn.
Challenging the Play of a Wild Draw 2
Otherwise the player can choose to challenge the play of the card. If they should challenge the play of the card, the player who played the Wild Draw 2 has to show them their entire hand. This is so the player can confirm that the card was played correctly.
If the player who played the Wild Draw 2 card had no cards that matched the Discard Pile’s color, they played the card correctly. The challenging player now has to draw four cards instead of the two they normally would have had to draw.
If the player played the Wild Draw 2 incorrectly (they had one or more cards that matched the current Discard Pile color), the player who played the Wild Draw 2 has to draw the two cards. The challenger does not have to draw any cards and they don’t lose their turn.
Wild Jim Hopper
The Wild Jim Hopper card features an oval in the corner showing four different colors.
When you play the Wild Jim Hopper card, all of the players count up how many cards they have in their hand. The player with the most cards in their hand gets to discard half of their cards. If the player has an odd number of cards, they get to discard an extra card.
The card is also wild so the player that plays it gets to choose a color. They can choose any of the four colors including the color it was before they played the Wild Jim Hopper card. The next player in turn order has to follow the new color when playing cards.
Flip (The Demogorgon)
The Flip card features a card with an arrow coming out of it with a picture of the Demogorgon.
When you play a Flip card, all of the cards in the game will flip from the Real World to the Upside Down side.
First you will flip over the Discard Pile. The card that was previously on the bottom of the Discard Pile is now on the top. If the top card on the Discard Pile is an Action card, you will ignore its effect. If a Wild is now on top of the pile though, the player who played the last Flip card gets to choose its color.
The Draw Pile is then flipped over to the other side. The previous top card will now be on the bottom of the deck.
Finally all of the players will flip all of the cards in their hand to the other side.
All of the cards will remain on the Upside Down side until another Flip card is played.
A Flip card can be played on top of another Flip card or it can be played on a card that matches its color.
Upside Down UNO Flip! Stranger Things Card Meanings
Number
The number cards have no special action in the game. You can only play them if they match the color or number of the top card on the Discard Pile.
Draw Five (Eddie Munson)
The Draw Five card features a +5 in the corners, and a picture of the character Eddie Munson.
When you play a Draw Five card, the next player in turn order has to draw five cards. They also lose their next turn.
You may play a Draw Five card on top of another Draw Five card, or a card that matches its color. If a Draw Five card is played against you, you may not play a Draw Five card in order to avoid the penalty.
Reverse (Billy Hargrove)
The Reverse card features two arrows pointing in opposite directions, and a picture of the character Billy Hargrove.
The Reverse card on the Upside Down side acts the same as the Reverse card on the Real World side. When you play a Reverse card, turn order will switch. If play was moving clockwise, it will now move counterclockwise. If it was moving counterclockwise, it will now move clockwise.
You may play a Reverse on top of another Reverse, or a card that matches its color.
Skip Everyone (Argyle)
The Skip Everyone card features an arrow pointing in a circle, and a picture of the character Argyle.
When you play a Skip Everyone card, all of the other players lose their turn. Basically the player who plays the Skip Everyone card gets to immediately take another turn.
You can play a Skip Everyone card on top of another Skip Everyone card, or a card that matches its color.
Wild Eleven’s Waffle
The Wild Eleven’s Waffle card features an oval with four colors in it as well as a picture of Eleven.
The card is wild so it can be played on any other card in the game.
Each player counts up how many cards they have in their hand. The player with the least cards in their hand is forced to draw cards. They will keep drawing cards until they draw a card that has a Waffle icon on it.
The card is also wild so the player gets to choose the color for the Discard Pile. They can choose any of the four colors including the color it was when they played the card. The next player in turn order has to play a card that matches the chosen color, or another wild card.
Wild Draw Color (Dustin Henderson)
The Wild Draw Color card features a stack of cards with an arrow pointing away from it, and a picture of the character Dustin Henderson.
The Wild Draw Color card is wild so it can be played at any time. The catch is that you can’t play it if you have another card in your hand that matches the current color. Wild cards count as matching the current color.
When you play the Wild Draw Color card, the next player has a decision to make.
They can choose to accept the play of the card. In this case the player who plays the card chooses a color for the Discard Pile. The next player then has to keep drawing cards from the Draw Pile until they draw a card that matches the color that was chosen. The player also loses their turn.
Challenging the Play of a Wild Draw Color
The next player otherwise can choose to challenge the play of the card. If they choose to challenge, the player who played the card has to show them their entire hand.
If the player played the Wild Draw Color correctly (they had no cards that matched the previous color), the challenging player has to still draw until they draw a card that matches the color chosen by the player who played the Wild Draw Color card. They also have to draw two additional cards.
If the challenge is successful (the player did have a matching color card), the player who played the Wild Draw Color card has to keep drawing cards until they draw the chosen color. The challenging player does not have to draw any cards and they don’t lose their turn.
Flip (The Demogorgon)
The Flip card features an arrow pointing away from a card, and a picture of the Demogorgon.
The Flip card on the Upside Down side acts the same as the Real World Flip card. When a player plays the card all of the cards will be flipped to the other side.
You may play a Flip card on top of another Flip card or a card that matches its color.
Calling UNO
When you only have one card left in your hand, you should call out UNO as quickly as possible. This is used to alert the other players that you are close to winning the game.
If you fail to call out UNO and another player catches you, you have to draw two cards and add them to your hand. The player has to call you out before the next player starts their turn.
Winning UNO Flip! Stranger Things
UNO Flip! Stranger Things ends when a player plays the last card from their hand. The player who plays the last card from their hand wins the game.
If you would like to play another game, you will shuffle the cards and play another hand.
Scoring in UNO Flip! Stranger Things
Instead of playing just one hand, you can choose to play a series of hands. In this case you can decide to keep score.
You will play the game the same as if you weren’t keeping score. The current round ends when a player plays the last card from their hand. The player who played the last card from their hand collects all of the cards left in their other players’ hands. If the last card forces the next player to draw cards, they will draw the corresponding number of cards before the winner of the round takes the cards from their hand.
The winner of the round scores points from the cards that they collected. You will score points from the side of the cards that were being used when the round ended.
- Number cards – Face value
- Draw One – 10 points
- Draw Five, Skip, Reverse, Flip – 20 points
- Skip Everyone – 30 points
- Wild Jim Hopper, Wild Eleven’s Waffle – 40 points
- Wild Draw Two – 50 points
- Wild Draw Color – 60 points
You will keep track of the points each player scores each round. If no one has reached 500 total points, another round is played.
The first player to score 500 total points wins UNO Flip! Stranger Things.
