Objective

The objective of Pop for Letters is to collect the most cards by the end of the game.

Setup

  • Shake the box with all of the popcorn cards inside in order to mix up the cards.
  • Place the box in the middle of the table so everyone can reach it.

How to Play Pop for Letters

On your turn you will randomly draw one of the popcorn cards out of the box.

Most of the cards feature a letter. When you draw one of these cards, you must say out loud what letter is printed on the card. If you say the letter correctly, you get to keep the card. If you do not say the letter correctly, you will set the card aside into an “un-popped” pile.

Letter card
This player has drawn an “E” card. The player must say “E” in order to keep the card. If they can’t say the letter correctly, the card is moved to the un-popped pile.

Other than letter cards, there are also “POP!” cards. When you draw one of these cards, you will gather up all of the cards you have collected so far in the game. You will return all of the cards to the box. The POP! card is removed from the game.

POP! card
This player has drawn a POP! card. They will lose all of the letter cards that they have collected so far in the game.

Whether you drew a letter or POP! card, your turn ends. Play passes to the next player. The rules do not specify turn order. You should probably take turns in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to make sure players get the same number of turns.

Winning the Game

The game ends once all of the cards have been removed from the box. Each player counts up how many they collected during the game. The player with the most cards wins the game.

Winning the game
At the end of the game the players collected these letter cards. The top player collected the most cards so they have won the game.

Variant Games

After the game ends, go back to the cards placed in the “un-popped” pile. See if any of the players can correctly say what is printed on the card.

You could play where instead of saying what letter is on the card, you can make players say what sound the letter makes.

Another alternative way of playing the game is have players name an object that starts with the letter you drew.
