Pop for Blends Board Game: Rules and Instructions for How to Play

Objective of Pop for Blends

The objective of Pop for Blends is to acquire the most popcorn cards by the end of the game.

Setup

  • Place all of the popcorn cards inside the box and mix them up. Place the box in the middle of the table.
  • Set the spinner on the table where everyone can reach it.
  • Choose a player to start the game.

Playing Pop for Blends

You will begin your turn by drawing a popcorn card from the box. On the card will be a blend or digraph (beginning of word).

A popcorn card with the letters "sp" on it.
This player has drawn a popcorn card with the letters “sp” on it. They will have to come up with words that start with “sp”.

Next you will spin the spinner. The number you spin on the spinner is the number of words that you have to come up with that use what was on the card you drew.

Spinning a two on the spinner
This player has spun a two on the spinner. They will have to come up with two words that start with the letters “sp” (based on the card they drew above). For example they can say “spin” and “special”.

If you successfully come up with enough words, you will keep the popcorn card which will score you a point at the end of the game.

Should you not be able to come up with enough words, you will set the card aside in a pile called “un-popped” cards.

Whether you successfully complete the card or not, the next player in turn order takes their turn.

POP Cards

Some of the cards in the game feature the word “POP”. These cards are unique and are used differently than the other cards.

Whenever you draw a POP card, you will return all of the cards you earned on previous turns to the box. You will then set the POP card aside as it will no longer be used for the rest of the game.

A POP card is drawn forcing the player who drew it to return all of their earned cards to the box.
This player has drawn a POP card. They will have to return all of the cards that they previously earned to the box.

Winning Pop for Blends

Players will keep taking turns until the last card is taken from the box.

At this time all of the players count up how many popcorn cards they have in front of themselves. The player with the most popcorn cards wins the game.

The players have acquired 22, 20, and 19 popcorn cards.
The players have acquired the following number of popcorn cards: 22, 20, and 19. The top player acquired the most popcorn cards, so they have won the game.

Double-Pop

After the game has ended you should take a look at the cards added to the “un-popped” pile. The players should try to come up with words that use these blends or digraphs.
