Objective of Monopoly Target Edition
The objective of Monopoly Target Edition is to acquire the most Savings throughout the game by purchasing various products.
Setup for Monopoly Target Edition
- Choose a player to be the Cashier. The Cashier will be in charge of the Bank’s money, Savings tokens and Item cards. The Cashier can play the game, but they must keep their money and other things separate from the Bank.
- The Cashier gives each player the following money:
- 2 – M5 bills
- 2 – M10 bills
- 1 – M20 bill
- 2 – M50 bills
- 1 – M100 bill
- Place the gameboard in the middle of the table.
- Put each Item card next to its space on the game board.
- Shuffle the Chance cards and place them facedown on the corresponding spot on the gameboard.
- Shuffle the Community Chest cards and place them facedown on the corresponding spot on the gameboard.
- Place one Target Circle token faceup on one space on each of the four sides of the board. The token can be placed on any item space as long as it matches the color on the token. Shuffle the other Target Circle tokens and place them in a pile facedown next to the board.
- Create a pile for the Savings tokens next to the gameboard. Place the dice near the gameboard.
- Each player chooses a playing piece and places it on GO.
- All of the players should also take a shopping basket and place it near them.
- The last player to visit a Target store starts the game. Play passes left/clockwise throughout the game.
Playing Monopoly Target Edition
To begin your turn you will roll both of the dice. Should you roll a one on a die, you will collect the RedCard. See the RedCard section below for more details.
Next you will move your playing piece clockwise around the board a number of spaces equal to the total you rolled on the dice. Depending on what space you land on, you will take a special action. See the Board Spaces section below.
While moving around the board you will occasionally pass the GO and Free Parking Space. Should your roll take you to or past one of these spaces, you can choose to stop on the space and check out. See the Check Out section below for more details.
Should you roll doubles, you will complete your turn and then roll the dice again to take another turn. Should you roll double three times in a row, you forfeit your third turn and immediately move your token to the Jail space.
After you complete your turn, you will pass the dice to the player on your left. They will then take their turn.
The Board Spaces of Monopoly Target Edition
As you move around the game board you will land on different types of board spaces. Each space type requires you to take a different special action.
Stocked Items
When you land on an item space you will check to see if the corresponding Item card is next to the space. If the item is still available, you will add the Item card to your basket. You will not pay for the item until you check out.
There is no limit to the amount of items you can place in your basket. You can also end up purchasing the same item multiple times during the game.
If you collect two items from the same department/color, you will double your Savings when you checkout. If you get the third item of a color, you do not get to double the Savings on the third item.
Out of Stock Items
Should you land on a item space whose matching Item card is in another player’s basket, you can choose to take that Item card from their cart if you want. If you want the item you have to pay the other player M25. You will then take the Item card and put it into your own basket.
Target Circle Token
Throughout the game players will place Target Circle tokens on board spaces. When you land on a space that has a Target Circle token on it, you will add the Target Circle token to your basket. You do not have to acquire the item from the space to take the Target Circle token. You will use the token when checking out in order to increase your Savings.
GO
Should you roll a number that would put you past the GO space you need to decide whether you want to check out. If you don’t check out you will take M50 from the bank and continue moving with the rest of your roll.
If you land on GO or want to check out, you will stop on the GO space. You will then have the opportunity to check out. If you don’t want to check out, you don’t have to. See the Check Out section below for more details. You will not collect the M50 until you start your next turn.
Free Parking
When you roll a number that would take you past the Free Parking space, you can choose to stop on the Free Parking space and forfeit the rest of your movement. When you land or stop on Free Parking, you have the option of checking out. You don’t have to check out if you don’t want to. See the Check Out section below for more details.
If you don’t want to check out and you still have spaces left to move, you can move past the Free Parking space without taking any special action.
Chance
When you land on the Chance space, you will take the top card from the Chance deck. You will read the card and take the corresponding action. Then return the card to the bottom of the Chance deck.
Community Chest
Should you land on the Community Chest space you will take the top card from the Community Chest deck. You will then take whatever action is printed on the card. After taking the action, return the card to the Community Chest deck.
Target Circle
When you land on the Target Circle space you will randomly draw one of the face down Target Circle tokens. Flip it over and look at the colors on the token.
You will choose an item space to place the token on that matches one of the colors on the token.
The next player to land on the space that you place the Target Circle token on, gets to take the token.
Deal Dash
Should you land on the Deal Dash space, you will immediately move your token to the nearest item space that has a Target Circle token on it. If this moves you past GO, you will collect M50.
If there are no Target Circle tokens on the board, this space does nothing.
Just Visiting
The Just Visiting space has no special action. Make sure you place your token on the Just Visiting section, and your turn ends.
Go To Jail
When you land on the Go to Jail space, you will move your token to the Jail space immediately. You do not receive money for passing GO and you cannot check out. You turn ends immediately.
There are three options to get out of jail.
- You can pay M25 at the beginning of your next turn. You will then roll the die and move normally.
- You can use a Get Out of Jail Free card at the start of your turn. You will put the card at the bottom of its appropriate deck. Then roll the die and move normally.
- Finally you can roll doubles to get out of jail. If you roll doubles you leave jail and use the roll to move around the board. If you fail to roll doubles three times, you will pay M25 and then roll the dice to move.
Target Circle Tokens
Throughout the game Target Circle Tokens will be put out on the board. These tokens help increase your Savings when you check out.
Whenever you land on a space that has a Target Circle token on it, you will pick it up and add it to your basket. When you check out you can use the token on any one Item card you decide to purchase. The Item card you use it on does not have to match the colors on the Target Circle token.
The RedCard
Whenever a player rolls a one on either/both dice, they will get to take the RedCard. If no one currently has the card, you will take it from the Bank. If another player currently has it, you will take it from them. You will keep control of the RedCard until another player rolls a one and takes it from you.
Should you check out when you have the RedCard, you will double any Savings you earn from all of the Item cards you purchase.
Checking Out in Monopoly Target Edition
When you land on or pass GO/Free Parking you have the opportunity to purchase the Item cards currently in your basket.
You can choose to purchase as many of the Item cards in your basket as you want. Any Item cards you choose not to purchase are returned to their corresponding space on the board.
When choosing which Item cards to purchase you want to buy the items that will earn you the most Savings. Along the bottom of each Item there is a number which indicates how much Savings you will receive from the purchase.
To purchase an item you must pay the cost to the Bank.
Calculating Your Savings in Monopoly Target Edition
If you purchase two Item cards of the same color, you will double the amount of Savings you earn from both cards. If you have three of the same color, the third item does not receive the bonus.
Should you have any Target Circle tokens you may apply them to one of the Item cards that you are purchasing. You may only apply one token to each Item card. If you use a Target Circle token on a color set of two, that will break up the set meaning you won’t receive double Savings for both items.
Add up the Savings you acquire from all of the Item cards you purchased. Collect Savings tokens from the Bank equal to the amount of Savings you earned.
Should you have the RedCard you will double your total.
Finally return all of the Item cards that you purchased to the corresponding spaces on the game board. If you used any Target Circle tokens, discard them to the box. You keep any Target Circle tokens that you didn’t use.
Deals and Trades
At any time in the game players can buy, sell or swap Item cards and Get Out of Jail Free cards. You may trade cash, Item cards and Get Out of Jail Free cards. The only requirement is that all of the players in the deal must agree to it.
End of Monopoly Target Edition
Monopoly Target Edition ends when the last Target Circle token is placed on the board. At this point each player gets one more turn. The player that places the last Target Circle token will take the last turn.
Once the game has ended all of the players have one last chance to check out and purchase any Item cards they have left in their basket.
After everyone is finished making their last purchases, the players count up the Savings they earned throughout the game. The player that acquired the most Savings wins the game. If there is a tie the tied players count up their money. The tied player with the most money breaks the tie.
