The original Operation is generally considered a classic children’s/family board game. Released in 2021 Operation X-ray Match Up once again stars the unlucky Cavity Sam. This time his ailment requires an X-ray. Unfortunately someone mixed up all of the X-ray pictures. Players will take turns trying to find the right X-ray to match each of Cavity Sam’s ailments. With quick hands and a good memory, maybe you can complete more ailment cards than the other players.
Objective of Operation X-Ray Match Up
The objective of Operation X-Ray Match Up is to acquire more ailment cards than the other players.
Setup for Operation X-Ray Match Up
- Insert batteries into the bottom of the X-ray scanner/game unit.
- Attach the wheels to the bottom of the X-ray scanner.
- Place the X-ray scanner in the center of the play area so everyone can reach it.
- Mix up the X-ray cards and place them in 2-3 rows next to the X-ray scanner. You should place the bluish green side of the cards face up.
- Shuffle the ailment cards and place them in a face down pile that all of the players can reach.
- The youngest player will go first. Play will proceed left (clockwise).

Playing Operation X-Ray Match Up
To begin your turn you will press Cavity Sam’s nose. This will start a timer. The players take turns in Operation X-Ray Match Up. During your turn you want to play as quickly as you can so you can acquire more ailment cards.

You will take the top card from the ailment pile and turn it face up in front of you. The card will feature two images that you are looking for.

You will then choose one of the X-ray cards and place it on top of the X-ray scanner. You should place it so the bluish green side is face up. The light on the X-ray scanner will reveal a hidden image on the X-ray card. What you do next depends on what image is shown on the card.
If the image on the X-ray card matches one of the two images on the ailment card, you will collect the ailment card. You will return the X-ray card to its prior position. If the timer hasn’t gone off yet, you can flip over another ailment card. You will then try to match the new card.

If the image on the X-ray card does not match one of the images on the ailment card, you will put the X-ray card back in its previous spot. You will then choose another X-ray card to place on the game unit. You will continue choosing new cards until you find one that has one of the items you are looking for.

Your turn continues until the timer goes off and the lights turn off. You will keep any ailment cards you matched. If you were unable to match an ailment card, it will be placed on the bottom of the ailment card pile.
Play will then pass to the next player.
End of Game
Operation X-Ray Match Up ends after all of the ailment cards have been matched. The player who collected the most ailment cards wins the game.

To turn off the game you will press and hold Sam’s nose for three seconds.
Single Player Game
If you are playing Operation X-Ray Match Up by yourself, your goal is to acquire all of the cards as quickly as possible. Each round is played the same, but you will take all of the turns. You will score your performance by how many rounds that it takes to collect all of the ailment cards. The game recommends trying to collect all of them within three rounds or less.
