  • Separate the red and yellow discs. Each player chooses one color.
  • Decide whether you are going to play the beginner or expert challenge. The difference between the two games are as follows:

    • Expert Challenge: You can only connect four discs in a row on either the top or bottom half of the board.
  • Choose a player to start the game.
Setup for Connect 4: Spin

Playing Connect 4: Spin

On your turn you will choose one of your discs to add to the grid. You have two types of discs. Nineteen of your discs are basic. You also have one weighted disc. This disc has extra weight which can impact the column when you spin it. You can use the weighted disc at any time.

Different Discs
The disc on the left is the basic disc. The disc on the right is the weighted disc.

Choose the space where you would like to add the disc. You can place a disc in any unoccupied space in the grid. Once you have chosen the space, press the disc until it snaps into the grid.

Inserting A Disc
The red player has inserted their first disc into the grid.

After you have placed the disc, spin the column that you placed the disc in. You must spin it hard enough that it makes a least two full rotations. If the column doesn’t make two full rotations, you must spin it again.

Spinning A Column in Connect 4: Spin
After spinning the column that they placed their disc in, their disc is now in the bottom half of the grid.

Should the column not stop in a vertical position, push down on it until the side closest to the base snaps into place.

Uncompleted Spin
The column that was spun did not make it to a completely vertical position. The player will push down on the column until it snaps into position.

Winning the Game

Players will keep taking turns until one has placed four discs in a row vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. If you are playing the beginner challenge, you can get four in a row crossing the center axis. If you are playing the expert challenge, all four discs must be on either the top or bottom half of the grid.

The first player to get four of their discs in a row, wins the game.

Winning Horizontally in Connect 4: Spin
The yellow player has won the game as they got four discs in a row horizontally in the top half of the grid. They would win in either the beginner or expert challenge.
Winning Connect 4: Spin Vertically
The red player has gotten four discs in a row vertically in the middle of the grid. They will win in the beginner challenge. If they were playing the expert challenge, they would not win as their discs cross the center axis.
Winning Diagonally in Connect 4: Spin
The yellow player has gotten four discs in a row diagonally. They would win in the beginner challenge. They wouldn’t win in the expert challenge though as the discs cross the center axis.

You can only win after you have spun the column that you placed your disc in. If you no longer have four in a row after spinning the column, you haven’t won the game yet.

Should you spin a column and both players end up winning at the same time, the player that didn’t spin the last column wins the game.

Both Players Win Connect 4: Spin
In this case both players got four in a row at the same time. Both players got four in a row diagonally. As the red player spun last, the yellow player wins the game.
