How to Play Waffles Vs Pancakes

To begin each turn the player on each team that will be playing this turn puts on the blindfold. One of their teammates pass them the team’s spatula and plate. When both players are ready, one of the players flip over the sand timer.

Both blindfolded players will try to use their spatula in order to pick up cards and add them to their plate. The player must keep the plate in their hand at all times. You must use your spatula to scoop the card onto your plate.

Scoop up card with spatula
The yellow team has picked up a pancake card with their spatula. Since they are team pancake, they will put the card on their plate.

You are trying to pick up cards that match your team: waffles or pancakes. Since you can’t see due to the blindfold, your teammates need to give you guidance on what card to scoop up. Teammates can never touch the player holding the plate or the plate they are holding.

While you are trying to pick up cards, you can hit the other team’s spatula with your own spatula.

You are trying to add as many matching cards to your plate as you can before time runs out. Once you add a card to your plate, you should try to pick up another card.

Special Cards

Most of the cards are either a pancake or waffle. There are a couple special cards though which have a special effect on the game when you collect them.

All but the Totally Toast card are Food Fighter cards. When you put one of these cards on your plate, a special action will be applied to the next round. The action depends on what card you collect. If you collect more than one Food Fighter card in a round, you can only keep one of the cards.

Totally Toast card

Totally Toast

The Totally Toast card is unique because its effect is applied if it ever touches your plate. Should the card touch your plate, the current round ends immediately. The other team automatically wins the round.

Totally Toast card on plate
The Totally Toast card is on the blue team’s plate. The blue team has lost the round.

The instructions are not clear on what this means. You could interpret it that the other team automatically wins the game. Otherwise you could interpret it to mean that the current round ends and only the other team scores points for the cards they collected. If you play it this way you will need to figure out how you score the current round.

Brain Freeze card

Brain Freeze

At the beginning of the next round the blindfolded player must say the following phrase three times before they can start trying to pick up any cards. “When ice cream’s cold, it’s quite a breeze, but brain freeze strikes when you eat with ease!”.

Cluck Struck card

Cluck Struck

The team that collects the Cluck Struck card can only use “cluck” sounds in the next round. This includes the player with the blindfold and their teammates.

Smack Talk card

Smack Talk

Each time your opponent adds a card to their plate in the next round, they must tap their head with their spatula.

Sweet Support card

Sweet Support

Once during the next round one of your teammates may use their hand or arm to keep a card in place so it is easier for you to scoop up.

Up in Arms card

Up In Arms

For the next round the blindfolded opponent on the other team must keep their hand at their chest when trying to pick up cards.

Scoring Points

When the timer runs out, both players stop picking up cards with the spatulas. They will take off their blindfolds. Each team will now score points for the cards their teammate picked up.

If you picked up any Food Fighter cards, you will take a special action. See the Special Cards section above for more details.

First count up the number of cards you collected that match your team (waffles or pancakes). You will score one point for each card that matches your team.

Next count up how many cards you put on your plate that match the other team. The other team scores one point for each card.

Scoring points in Waffles vs Pancakes
The yellow team is team pancakes. They ended up collecting three pancakes which are worth three points. The waffle card they picked up is worth negative one point. So they score a total of two points this round. They also get to use the ability from the Smack Talk card.

After both teams scored the cards they collected, the current round ends. Each team chooses a new player to put on the blindfold and try and pick up cards in the next round. All of the players should take on the role once during the game. The rules do not specify if you keep the cards you collected, or if you return them to the table.

Winning Waffles Vs Pancakes

The game ends when everyone has been blindfolded at least once. Each team counts up how many points they scored in the game. The team that scored the most points wins Waffles Vs Pancakes.
