Note: The rules for UNO Moo! have changed some over time. I will note in the corresponding sections where the rules differ between versions.
Objective
The objective of UNO Moo! is to be the first player to get rid of all of your figures.
Set Up
- Place all of the figures in the barn and mix them up.
- Each player randomly draws five figures from the barn.
- Some older versions of the game (2008-2013) included haystack partitions. If your version of the game has them, each player takes one and places their figures behind it.
- One of the players randomly takes one of the figures from the barn and place it on the barn door on the side of the barn.
- The youngest player starts the game.
How to Play UNO Moo!
On your turn you will try to play one of your figures to the barn. You will first look at the figure on the barn door. Look to see what color and animal it is.
Then look at your figures. You can play a figure if it matches the color or animal that is currently on the barn door. Should you have two or more figures that match, you will pick one to play.
To play a figure you will place it on the barn door and push until the previous figure is pushed into the barn. Your figure should sit on the barn door.
Drawing a Animal Figure
If you have no figures that you can play (none match the color or animal), you will draw a new figure. Open the roof on the barn and randomly pick a figure.
If the figure you pick matches the color or animal on the barn door, you can play your new figure immediately. If you can’t play the new figure, you will add it to your collection of figures.
Whether you play a figure or draw one, your turn ends. Play passes to the player on your left.
UNO Moo! Figure Meanings
Normal Animals
There are five normal animals in UNO Moo!. These include chickens, cows, dogs (newer versions don’t have them), pigs, and sheep. These figures have no special effect in the game. You can only play them if they match the color or animal on the barn door.
Skunk
The skunk is unique in that its effect has actually changed between versions of UNO Moo!.
In all versions of the game a skunk can only be played if it matches the color of the figure on the barn door, or if there is a skunk on the barn door.
In versions from 2008-2013 the skunk acts as a draw two. When you play the skunk, the next player has to randomly draw two figures from the barn. They also lose their turn.
From 2014 and on the figure has become a skip. When you play the skunk, the next player loses their turn.
Farmer
The farmer figure is treated as a wild. It matches any figure so you can play it at any time on your turn.
When you play the farmer figure, you choose the color for the barn. The next player has to play a figure of the color you choose. The one exception is that they can play their own farmer.
Should the game begin with a farmer on the barn door, the first player chooses what color it will be and plays a figure of the corresponding color.
Saying UNO Moo!
When you play your second to last figure (you only have one figure left), you must immediately say UNO Moo!. This tells the other players that you are close to winning the game.
If you don’t say the phrase and another player catches you, you need to randomly draw two figures from the barn. They must challenge you before the next player plays or draws a figure. If they don’t, there is no punishment for not saying the phrase.
Winning the Game
The first player to play their last figure wins the game.
