Recent Board, Card, and Role-Playing Game Releases: June 5-July 19, 2015

The following is a list of board, card, and role-playing games that appear to have been released over the last few weeks (from June 5 to July 19, 2015). Game release dates tend to be pretty hard to pin down so some of these games may not yet be available in all stores (especially brick and mortar ones), may not actually be released yet (sometimes games appear to have been released or had a date set but weren’t actually released), or may have come out much earlier without me knowing.

This list is in alphabetical order. If you notice I am missing a game or incorrectly have a game listed as released that hasn’t been released yet, please let me know in the comments section and I will update the post. Clicking the box art will bring you to the game’s Amazon.com page (we do make a small percentage that helps keep this blog running if you purchase something from our links and it doesn’t cost you any extra cash).

We here at Geeky Hobbies are always looking to try and review new board, card, and role-playing games so if you are involved in the production of any of these games (or any other games) and would like to see it reviewed on this blog, contact us and we’ll most likely be willing to review it.

Highlights:

Boss Monster 2: The Next Level (Brotherwise Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-The sequel to the well-received (just outside the top 1000 in Board Game Geek’s board game rank) retro video game-themed card game, Boss Monster 2: The Next Level adds 160 new cards that can be used as a standalone game or as an expansion to the original game. The game has players take on the role of video game-style boss monsters who will try to eliminate adventurers and build the best, most treasure-filled dungeon. As someone who grew up playing the original Nintendo games as a child (and still loves to get them out to play every so often), Boss Monster is one of those games I really want to try but just haven’t gotten yet.

Forbidden Stars (Fantasy Flight Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Already a top 1000 game on Board Game Geek’s board game rank (#695 as of this post’s publication), Forbidden Stars is a wargame with dice rolling, hand management, area control, and modular board mechanics. Each player takes control of a different fighting force (all of which offer unique armies and play styles) and try to claim their faction’s key objective tokens which are scattered throughout the board. Since your opponents will likely defend your objective tokens (so you can’t get to them), you will need to build an army and command them in wars against the opponents who are keeping you from claiming your tokens. That sounds pretty darn awesome to me.

Extra! Extra! (Mayfair Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Even though Extra! Extra! only came out about a month ago, I somehow managed to find a sealed copy in a thrift store already. While this newspaper-themed board game doesn’t seem to be as good as the one released a couple months ago (Penny Press), it still looks solid. Players attempt to fill the front and back pages of their newspaper with a mixture of stories (the bigger, the better) while sending their reporters out to the news they want to publish, bidding for the rights to cover those stories, and selling news to make some extra money. Since we already found a copy for a very cheap price already, expect a review of Extra! Extra! very soon here on Geeky Hobbies.

Spyfall (Cryptozoic Entertainment) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Spyfall is a party game (currently ranked as the 454st best game on Board Game Geek) played over several rounds where all players receive cards showing the same location (like a pirate ship or space station), except for one player who gets a card that says “spy” instead of showing a location. Players start asking each other questions to try to figure out who among them is the spy (since the spy doesn’t know where he is, he will have to listen to the other players’ stories closely to try to craft an answer that will actually make sense). At any point, a player can accuse another of being the spy and if all other players agree with the accusation and the spy is uncovered, all players score points. However, the spy can end a round himself by announcing what he thinks the secret location is. If his or her guess is correct, they score the only points in the round. This game seems to be selling out constantly and I can see why, it seems like a very unique and awesome party game that I would love to play.

Firefly: Tall Card (Toy Vault) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Based on a game played in the Firefly episode “Shindig,” Tall Card is a game very similar to draw poker but with suits inspired by Mah Jong tiles. In the TV series, the stakes of the game are various chores on the ship like doing the dishes and cleaning the septic vat; no word on whether the loser of this game will be forced to clean up the house as punishment. Even though this game sounds pretty simple, since I’m a huge Firefly fan I definitely want to give it a try.

Magic the Gathering: Origins (Wizards of the Coast) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-2015’s core Magic the Gathering set (which also doubles as an introductory set), Origins contains 272 cards and introduces mechanics like double-faced Planeswalkers, spell mastery, menace, and renown.

Bring Out Yer Dead (Ginger Ale Games/Upper Deck Entertainment) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Bring Out Yer Dead tasks players with one of the most morbid (but potentially hilarious) roles I’ve seen in a board game, getting the “dying” members of their family into the best graveyard plots as they can. You must get your family members into the Grave Keeper’s cart before the other families can or risk having him toss their coffin into the river (the Grave Keeper is a very lazy guy). Getting your family members buried in the best plots helps you gain influence in the city. You can even resort to grave robbing or swapping to win some of that precious influence. Bring Out Yer Dead sounds like it could be funny to play and the early reviews on Board Game Geek are pretty positive.

Broom Service (Ravensburger) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Broom Service is a remake of Rio Grande Games’ award-winning game Witch’s Brew. However, the game has changed a bit with the addition of three types of roles (witches, druids, and gatherers), new illustrations and game pieces, and a new two-player version of the game. Broom Service is a family card game with bluffing and hand management elements that is played over seven rounds of between four and ten turns. Players simultaneously select four of their ten role cards each round and then take turns playing one role at a time. Roles have both brave actions and cowardly actions to pick from. Cowardly actions are safe but brave ones are strong (but can be stolen later). The goal is to use gatherer roles to collect ingredients to make potions with, witch roles to move to different areas, and druid roles to deliver the potions and collect victory points.

Game of Crowns (Alderac Entertainment Group aka AEG) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-I’m going to take a wild guess and say that Game of Crowns was inspired heavily by Game of Thrones. However, as a fan of the show that is an awesome concept for a board game to use. In Game of Crowns, up to nine players take control of a different noble house competing to take the crown and gain power over the others. Players can exchange cards and favors (and take the diplomatic approach) or attack their opponents using warfare (the not so diplomatic approach) in their efforts to win the Game of Thrones…I mean Game of Crowns.

Dead Men Tell No Tales (Minion Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Dead Men Tell No Tales is a pirate-themed co-operative game (considering the selfishness of pirates, I’m guessing you never thought you would see a pirate game where players work together) for two to five players which allows players to pass their actions to their teammates to best utilize their assets. The board is built as the game goes on. The object of Dead Men Tell No Tales is to loot treasure and items that will help you on your quest and defeat the enemies and guards you come across. Can your crew loot all the treasure and live to tell the story? I love co-operative games (and wish more were made even though I know it’s hard to come up with concepts that work as co-op games) and pirates so this is definitely a game I would like to get and play in the future.

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers Age of Ultron (WizKids Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-I’ve never played a Dice Masters game before but I’ve always wanted to since I know they are great games. The Avengers Age of Ultron set adds 44 new dice and 142 unique cards to the dice-rolling game (including characters like Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Captain Marvel).

Chew: Cases of the FDA (IDW Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Based on the popular comic book series about an FDA agent who solves crimes by using his food psychic powers (by eating something, he can get a psychic sensation of what happened to the object; this often means he has to eat part of the victim), Chew: Cases of the FDA is a quick game (playable in about 30 minutes) for 2-5 players who compete to close cases directly from the pages of the comic book.

Snake Oil: Elixir (Out of the Box Game Company) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-An expansion to Out of the Box’s popular game Snake Oil, Elixir can be played by itself or can add millions of new combinations to the main game. Snake Oil is an Apples to Apples-like party game (if you have read a lot of our reviews on Geeky Hobbies, you know how much we love the genre) where players “invent” two-word products (using the cards in their hands) and must try to sell them to the round’s judge (or in this case “customer”). It’s a very simple concept but I imagine it could be a lot of fun and very funny to play, especially if your group is funny and creative.

Stockpile (Nauvoo Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Stockpile is a stock market game where players are given insider information about certain stocks (dictating how a stock’s value will change at the end of the round), allowing them to get ahead of the market and buy or sell at the right time. I know that there have been a lot of stock market-themed games in the past but Stockpile seems like one of the best. I’ve always been fascinated with the subject so I will definitely be looking for this game at thrift stores.

The Game of Life: Inside Out (USAopoly) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Trying to capitalize on the immensely popular movie, USAopoly has decided to release a Game of Life version of Inside Out. Players navigate through Riley’s life and her five emotions as her life, city, school, and home change.

Parfum (Queen Games) (Buy It On: Amazon.com)-Not surprisingly, Parfum takes players into the perfume industry and tasks them with becoming the most successful perfumer.
