Setup
- Find the five characters cards. Each player chooses one to use throughout the game. The card gives the player a special ability that they can use throughout the game. Return any remaining character cards to the box.
- Shuffle the rest of the cards.
- Deal five cards to each player. You can look at your own cards, but you should keep them secret from the other players.
- Place the rest of the cards facedown on the table to form the draw pile.
- The youngest player starts the game. Play moves left/clockwise throughout the game.
How to Play Monopoly Deal Harry Potter
To begin each of your turns you will draw two cards from the draw pile. Add the cards to your hand. Should you start your turn with no cards, you will draw five cards.
After you have drawn the cards, you can choose to play up to three of your cards. You do not have to play three cards if you don’t want to. You can even choose to play no cards.
Once you have finished playing cards from your hand, check to see how many cards you have left in your hand. If you have more than seven cards in your hand, choose cards to discard until you are down to seven cards.
Playing Cards
There are three different types of cards in Monopoly Deal Harry Potter. You can play a card in three different ways depending on its type.
First you can add a card to your bank. You can only do this with Point or Spell cards. When you choose to add a card to your bank, place it on top of any other cards that are already in your bank. You should make sure that you can see the number in the top left corner of each card. Each card is worth the amount printed in the top left corner. Once you add a card to your Bank, it stays there. You can’t later decide to use a Spell card for its action.

Next you can choose to play a magical item card in front of you. If you have any other cards of the same color already in front of you, add your latest card to the stack so each card is still visible. There is no limit to the number of magical item cards that you can have in front of you.

Finally you can choose to play a Spell card for its effect. Read what is printed on the card, and follow the special action. For a more detailed explanation of each Spell Card, see the corrresponding section in our Monopoly Deal Harry Potter Card Meanings post. After you have completed the action, add the Spell card to the discard pile. The only exception to this is if the card specifically says not to discard it.

Paying Other Players
Throughout the game you may have to pay another player. There are two different ways that you can pay another player.
First you can pay them with cards from your Bank. Find cards with values equal to or higher than the amount you owe. You will add the cards to the Bank of the player you owe. When you pay with cards from your Bank, they immediately go to the other player’s Bank. That player cannot choose to take a Spell card and use it for its effect.

Second you can pay with the magical items that you have played in front of yourself. Each card is worth the amount on the left side of the card. When you give a magical item card to another player, you will add it to that player’s current magical item cards. If any card you give matches the color of a card the player already has, you will add it to the corresponding stack.

You could also choose to pay with both items from your Bank and magical items. The player paying chooses how they want to pay it off. The player receiving the money does not get to pick what cards they want. You can never pay off your debt with cards in your hand.
If you do not have exact change for what you owe, you will have to overpay. Say you owe four points and you only have a five point card, you will have to give the player the five point card and they don’t owe you anything for the extra you paid.

Should you not have enough to pay off all that you owe, you only pay what you have in front of you. If you have no cards in front of you, you don’t owe anything to the other player.
Winning Monopoly Deal Harry Potter
The game immediately ends once a player completes three different sets of magical item cards. Each card shows how many cards it needs to be a complete set. The three different sets you create have to be different colors. The first player to create the three sets, wins the game.

You can use Magical Item Cards to pay other players. The instructions specifically say that you can't add Magical Item Cards to your Bank though.
