Looking for specific Blank Slate rules:  |  Setup  | Writing Down An Answer | Scoring | Winning the Game |

Setup

  • Each player chooses a Slate and a dry erase marker.
  • After you have selected a Slate, write your name in the row on the scoreboard that matches the color of your Slate.
  • Choose a player to be the first Selector.

How to Play Blank Slate

Each round begins with the current Selector taking a card from the draw side of the box. They will read the card out loud and then places it face-up in the middle of the table.

Card for Blank Slate
For this round all of the players will have to fill in the blank in front of luck.

Writing Down An Answer

The card will have a word printed on it along with a blank. The blank could either come before or after the word. Each player has to think of a word to write down on their Slate that fills in the blank from the card. You want to write down something that works with the word already on the card, but you don’t want it to be too obvious. The best case scenario is to have only one other player write down what you write down.

Writing down an answer on your slate
This player decided to write down “good” on their slate to make the phrase good luck.

There are a few rules that you must follow when writing down your answers:

  • You can never fill in the blank with a single letter.
  • Your answer can be just a syllable instead of a whole word, as long as you can still hear the word from the card when you read out the new word.
Syllable answer
For this round the players have to fill in ______ print. This player has decided to write down mis which makes the word misprint.
  • Your answer can create a compound word, or it can create a two-word phrase.
  • Proper nouns are allowed as long as you only add one word to fill in the blank.

Scoring

After everyone has written down their answer, all of the players reveal their boards. Players will compare the answers they wrote down. Players will score points if their answer matches one or more other players.

Should a player’s answer match one other player’s answer, both matching players score three points for their answers.

When more than two players write down the same answer, each player who wrote down the answer scores one point.

Should you write down an answer that no one else wrote down, you score zero points.

Comparing answers in Blank Slate
The players wrote down these answers during the round. Two players wrote down “bad”. Since there were only two players that wrote down the answer, they both score three points. Three players wrote down “good”, so each only scores one point. Finally one player wrote down “blind”, and another wrote down “no”. Neither of these players score any points since they didn’t match any other players.

Each player marks off a number of circles in their row on the scoreboard equal to the number of points they scored in the round.

Scoring in Blank Slate
The orange and red players matched so they both score three points this round. The blue, yellow and green player matched so each scores one point. The purple and brown players didn’t match anyone, so they didn’t score any points.

If none of the players have scored enough points to win the game, you will play another round. The card used in the previous round is placed in the back of the box (discard side). The player to the left of the current Selector becomes the Selector for the next round.

Winning Blank Slate

The game ends when a player scores 25 or more points. The first player to score 25 points wins the game. Should multiple players score 25 points in the same round, the player that scored the most points wins the game.

Winning the game
The orange player has scored 25 points. They won the game.
