Setup

  • Place the gameboard, card box, and timer in the middle of the table where everyone can reach it.
  • Normally players have to name three things for each category. If there are younger or less experienced players, you can decide that those players only need to give two answers. Before you begin the game, the players have to agree on how many answers each player has to give.
  • Each player chooses a pawn and places it on the start space.
  • The youngest player starts the game on the hot seat. Play passes right during the game.

How to Play 5 Second Rule Disney Edition

To begin each turn the player to the left of the current player on the hot seat takes a card from the box. They will read the card out loud to all of the players. If the card has a subject matter that the player does not know or understand, you can either explain the card to them or choose a different card.

Player giving three answers in time
For this round the player in the hot seat has to name three songs from Disney movies. The player could give answers such as “Circle of Life”, “You’ve Got A Friend In Me”, and “Let It Go”.

After the card is read, the timer is flipped over. This starts a five second timer. The current player on the hot seat needs to list off a number of answers that meet the category printed on the card. Usually you have to give three answers. If it was agreed that the player only has to give two answers, they only have to give two answers. The current player on the hot seat has to give all of their answers before all three balls on the timer reach the bottom. If there is a disagreement on whether an answer should count, the players can vote on whether it should be allowed. Majority rules. Otherwise you can decide to look up any questionable answers online.

If you give enough correct answers in time, you will move your pawn forward one space on the gameboard.

Moving a pawn forward one space
The yellow player gave enough answers in time. They move their pawn forward one space.

Should a player be unable to give enough answers in time, they do not get to move their pawn forward. Instead the player on their left gets the next opportunity on the hot seat. They will have five seconds to provide three (or two) answers before time runs out. The catch is that this player cannot give any answers given by any other players during the current round.

Stealing a card after a player couldn't give enough answers
The first player on the hot seat was only able to answer Simba and Scar before time ran out. The next player gave the answers Mufasa, Pumbaa, and Timon.

Players will keep taking turns in the hot seat until either a player gives enough answers before time runs out, or the role of the hot seat returns to the first player that was on the hot seat. Whichever player gets the answers in time, moves their pawn forward one space. Should the hot seat return to the first player, they will move their pawn forward one space.

The player to the right of the original player in the hot seat starts the next round in the hot seat. A new card will be drawn for the next round.

5+5 Space

If the player on the hot seat’s pawn is currently on a 5+5 space, the player gets ten seconds in order to give their answers. When the timer runs out, you will flip it over. The player has until the second time the balls reach the bottom of the timer in order to give their answers.

5+5 space
The blue player is currently on the 5+5 space. When they are on the hot seat they will have ten seconds to give their answers.
